The world’s biodiversity is shrinking at an alarming rate, and zoos and aquariums across Canada are determined to do something about it. CAZA, Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums, is today launching a national campaign on biodiversity. Its objective is to raise awareness of this urgent issue and to inspire as many as 11 million zoo and aquarium visitors over the coming year to make a difference every day.
According to CAZA President Clint Wright, “This is by far the most important public awareness campaign we have launched to date. Biodiversity is critical to the future of the planet, and its decline is rapid. Long before humans roamed the Earth, the extinction of species occurred naturally for a variety of reasons. But over the last century, human activity has increased extinction rates 100 fold. Clearly, the time to turn things around is now.” The responsibility of accredited zoos and aquariums today extends far behind the confines of their grounds. They play an increasingly important role in education and conservation.
In addition to a suite of visually stunning educational videos and posters, the campaign will tap into two key social media tools – Facebook and Twitter – to reach beyond visitors to zoos and aquariums. Lastly, and perhaps most powerfully, a free interactive App available in several languages has the power to spread globally the message that we need to reverse the decline of the world’s biodiversity.
The Biodiversity is US campaign was launched at the global level by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) on May 12, 2014, and was timed to support the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011-2020). A core message of the campaign is that we are all part of the exciting web of life called biodiversity. Without it, the planet’s future is at risk. simple changes to the way they live their lives can make a dramatic difference.
