OTTAWA (January 29, 2021) – “Today the Assiniboine Park Zoo will open to its members and the public will be able to return on Saturday, January 30th, this is great news not only for the zoo, the animals, and the visiting public, it is also a demonstration of why accreditation matters”, said Jim Facette, Executive Director of CAZA.
Throughout this pandemic, Canada’s 29 accredited zoos and aquariums have demonstrated they can adapt, adhere to public health authority guidelines, and offer a safe and positive visitation experience.
“Our industry reopening committee and Canada-wide communication has resulted in not only sharing of experiences but also of best practices. The mental health benefit of being able to connect with nature again is an important offering of accredited facilities across Canada”, Mr. Facette added. Assiniboine visitors are asked to plan their visit by using online ticket purchasing, use face masks and respect social distancing while on-site, and avoid gatherings with those outside of your household. These measures have proven to be safe and successful across Canada.
In the weeks ahead as the snow melts away and Spring arrives all of Canada’s 29 accredited zoos and aquariums will be ready to showcase their conservation and education contribution to Canada’s biodiversity.
